Artist's Thoughts

About the Workshop

Gelli-plate monoprinting is a wonderfully enjoyable and accessible art form that both experienced artists and first-time creatives can enjoy together. Whether this is your first workshop or your tenth, you’re sure to enjoy a creative, inspiring, and relaxing morning.

We begin the day with a cup of coffee or tea before I introduce the monoprinting process with a step-by-step demonstration. From there, you’ll have plenty of time to experiment with vibrant printing inks, colours, textures, stencils, botanical materials, and a variety of interesting objects to create your own unique prints.

Each participant works on their own Gelli plate, which I provide, while we share inks and printing materials. Using palette knives and rollers, you’ll mix colours, build beautiful layers, experiment with composition, and discover the magic of pulling one-of-a-kind monoprints. Every print is different, and the element of surprise is part of what makes this process so rewarding.

During the workshop you will learn how to:

  • Use a Gelli plate to create original monoprints.
  • Build layered prints using colour, shape, texture, and pattern.
  • Experiment with botanical materials, paper cuttings, fabric, lace, feathers, stencils, and other textured objects.
  • Develop a collection of vibrant, unique prints while gaining confidence in this versatile printmaking technique.

By the end of the morning, you’ll head home with a wonderful collection of original monoprints and, hopefully, a new creative passion. The process is surprisingly effortless, relaxing, and incredibly satisfying.

Bring your friends or treat yourself to a morning of creative exploration. This workshop also makes a wonderful gift for someone who loves making art or would simply enjoy trying something new.

What to Bring

Please bring a few textured items for printing, such as soft plants and flowers, leaves, lace, textured fabric, feathers, paper cuttings, or anything else that might create interesting textures or shapes. We will share materials, so you don’t need to bring much. Also bring an apron.

Refreshments

Coffee and tea are included.

Optional

I will provide plenty of paper for everyone. However, if you’d like to experiment, you’re welcome to bring your own papers for special prints – for example:

  • Smooth multimedia paper (A3, 160 gsm or heavier)
  • Handmade paper
  • Tissue paper
  • Wallpaper
  • Any other interesting paper that you’d like to print on

The greater the variety, the more exciting the results!
