Artist's Thoughts
I love the limited palette used in this piece. The showstoppers are the striking Protea Nitida (Waboom Protea), with their bold flowers and sculptural forms. I combined them with cream-coloured Chinkerinchees, a vibrant yellow Butterfly Lily, delicate Helichrysum blooms, and tall, graceful Restios. This painting brings me a deep sense of peace whenever I look at it.
This artwork forms part of my Saunter series:
The Saunter series invites viewers to journey with me through the Cape Floral Kingdom, where I explore the beauty of nature at an unhurried pace. Inspired by the simple act of strolling, these paintings capture the spirit of the fynbos landscapes of Table Mountain in Cape Town through my slow and observant wanderings. Each step becomes an opportunity to pause, to wonder, and to absorb the intricate beauty of the flora surrounding me.
Back in my studio, these impressions spill out as colour, movement, and form. My brush becomes charged with the energy of the landscape, boldly translating the vitality of nature onto canvas. Through my work, I seek to echo the rhythms of the wild – the wind moving through the fynbos, the explosion of colour and texture in the plants, the changing seasons, and the constant emergence of new life.
This series is also a reminder to move slowly and attentively, finding my Creator in creation. By lingering in nature and absorbing its quiet energy, I allow that sense of renewal and vitality to flow into my paintings.
