The Blue Disa (Disa graminifolia) is one of the most striking orchids of the fynbos biome, known for its vivid blue to violet flowers that bloom in summer on Table Mountain. Often found near streams and damp mountain areas, this delicate flower is a symbol of the region’s rich biodiversity and the fragile beauty of the fynbos biome.
In this dynamic painting, I combined it with yellow Everlastings and Restios.
This artwork is part of my Unspoken series: I have been painting the Cape Floral Kingdom for many years, and I continue my exploration of South Africa’s unique and biodiverse vegetation. In my series, Unspoken, I explore the silent yet profound dialogue that nature facilitates. When I spend time in nature, I become acutely aware of its silent voice, whispering its truths to me — whispers of hope, restoration, quietness, happiness, and peace. As a Christian, I recognize these quiet revelations as the voice of a higher presence, gently investing in my soul. Through bold oil strokes and a high-contrast colour palette, I infuse my paintings with this unspoken language. I approach my canvas as a medium for introspection and understanding, embracing the notion that art communicates in ways words cannot fully capture. By focusing on fynbos, a symbol of resilience and delicate beauty, Unspoken invites the viewer to immerse themselves in nature’s silent narratives, fostering a deeper connection to emotions it evokes – knowing that the deepest truths often transcend words.
