‘Human Nature’ series

I often walk along the fynbos-rich mountain paths of the Table Mountain Nature Reserve. It’s here I feel most connected to nature, as well as to my Creator.

Human Nature is a series of monoprints and collages, incorporating human silhouettes into fynbos settings. Man, and nature being in harmony and becoming one – becoming absorbed. Pieces of actual fynbos were used to create monoprints on paper, using a home-made jelly slab. I used a stencil to block out the silhouette and another stencil to create the oval shape of the works.

The oval is the shape of an egg and represents the theme of ‘new life’ in the artwork. The promise of something new happening. A new creation. Birth.

We are connected – Nature; Human; Spirit.

This artwork was a commission for a client as a Christmas gift for her husband.  He is an expert in Fynbos plants and knows every specimen.  I used a photo of him to create the personalised human silhouette.  I also used his favourite fynbos plants to create the monoprint:  Watsonia and Erica.  I then made the monoprint and collage in the colours of my client’s choice and completed the artwork just in time for Christmas!
