I have recently reworked this painting, adding a fresh layer of oil paint and giving the work renewed depth, energy, and vibrancy.
Blue has always been one of my favourite colours to paint with. Within the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of the plants that continually captures my imagination is the wild Agapanthus africanus, which often surprises me along my fynbos walks. In this painting, I combined the graceful agapanthus with soft cream-coloured everlasting flowers, together with abstract shapes and flowing lines that echo the movement and rhythm of nature.
This artwork forms part of my Saunter series.
The Saunter series invites viewers to journey with me through the Cape Floral Kingdom as I explore the beauty of nature at an unhurried pace. Inspired by the simple act of strolling, these paintings emerge from my quiet wanderings through the fynbos landscapes of Table Mountain. Each walk becomes an opportunity to pause, wonder, and absorb the intricate details of the natural world.
Back in the studio, these impressions unfold into colour, gesture, and form. My brush becomes charged with the energy of movement and light, boldly bringing to life the scenes and sensations gathered in nature. Through these works, I seek to reflect the rhythms of the wild -the wind moving through the fynbos, the vibrant bursts of colour and shape, the changing seasons, and the constant emergence of new life.
This series is also a reminder to move slowly and attentively, finding my Creator within creation itself. By walking gently through nature, I absorb its vitality and allow that sense of renewal to flow into the paintings.
