Artist's Thoughts
This lino artwork is part of a series of three large lino prints. I made them as a commission for a hotel in Sea Point, Cape Town. The Fynbos grows on the Twelve Apostles side of Table Mountain on the Atlantic seaboard where I love to walk on the mountain trails.
While cutting into the lino with my carving tools, I look for similarities between fynbos and human beings. As humans, we too, must sometimes undergo a process of cutting away to ultimately show our true beauty. Fynbos, likewise, gets scorched by field fires, to produce new life and a better flowering season.
I used my body weight as a human printing press, standing on the lino block and transferring the ink onto the paper.
