Proteas after the fire

Title: Proteas after the fire
Size: 1100 x 1100mm
Medium: Oil on stretched canvas
Year: 2022

This large painting was inspired by Protea flowers after a recent wild fire on Table Mountain. I found beauty in the bright, bronze cones and seeds in contrast to the black charcoal and ash after the destructive fire. I aimed to portray the hope for new life (seeds deposited by the Protea cones) after the scorching fire. I find parallels between the natural an the spiritual – there is hope after heaviness… new life will follow.

I used the colours of fire, ash and smoke.
