These two large oil paintings are the fruit of my creativity in the lockdown of autumn and winter 2020.
The canvasses were delivered just before South Africa went indoors to hide from the Covid-19 pandemic – perfect timing.
I decided to use the paintings to bring pleasure, colour and freedom into our lives in this tense time. The beautiful autumn weather and the abundance of rain in the early winter, reminded me that God sustains His creation and that He is still in control. During these months, I became intensely aware of God’s grace to me as well as His provision – even when my own faith was small.
“And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.” 2 Cor 9:8
My hope is that God’s grace will overflow from my life into good works to others.
I used photos of fynbos plants (collected over time on Table Mountain) as a general reference but deviated from the original colours and shapes early in my creative process, as I wanted to portray freedom – in my mark making, the vibrant colours and strong contrasts.
